Student Pilot Meetup Group

We've started back up!

The Student Pilot Meet-up Group (SPMG) began in the spring of 2019, after a few of us met at the Pilatus tour in March and identified that we were in similar places on our paths in aviation. Inspired to share stories and support each other as our journeys unfolded, we began meeting casually at coffee shops once a month where we could exchange advice, voice our fears, feel safe asking questions, and laugh together as we encountered the challenges and successes of learning to fly. Out of this mutual passion the group has grown and our destinations have become more adventurous.

Our first meeting was in April, 2019, attended by five of us ladies from the Boulder County area. Since then the group has grown to include members from all over the front range. We are all ages coming into aviation from all walks of life, each of us on our paths at her own pace in her own way. It is the diversity of each of our unique approaches to flying that makes our group a rich resource of support and knowledge.

Some highlights from our meet-ups include touring the Wings Over the Rockies museum, participating in the Honor the WASP initiative, and gathering at the old Stapleton Tower for an evening at the Punch Bowl Social. SPMG events took us to many parts of Colorado in 2019: from Boulder to Aurora, from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins. Many student pilots have participated in Colorado 99s local chapter events including the 2019 air marking at APA, the annual Poker Run at various airports around the state, and the 2019 Let's Fly Now! and Girl Scout Patch events at COS. We have celebrated the achievements of our members, including Christine Chang who earned her PPL on May 31st, 2019 and Karin Carter who was awarded the Future Woman Pilot Scholarship in the spring season of 2019.

In 2020 the SPMG moved over to video conferencing, in response and adaptation to the global health crisis, as a method of maintaining a connection with each other. We launched our new meeting medium with a Wine and Wings event about Summer Flying in June, which was well-attended and has kept the momentum going for the group during uncertain times. We will continue to meet safely, to educate, socialize and most of all, have fun as we learn to fly.

If you are interested in receiving emails from the Student Pilot Meetup Group about upcoming events, we can be contacted by email at spmg@colorado99s.org. You can also find information about future meetups on the Colorado 99s Facebook page . You need not be a student to participate in our events, and that there is no prerequisite to being a member of the 99s organization to join us for a meet-up. All you need is a passion for flying and a desire to share time with other aviators. Come to one of our meet-ups and experience the support and joy of meeting with other people who love to fly!
